Leonard Smoot

Golf Coach Leonard Smoot has established cohesive relationships with the Birmingham community and, as of 2019, has provided clinics for more than 240 young people. As a result of his work with student athletes and youth in the Birmingham community, Coach Smoot was inducted into the 2019 African American Golfers Hall of Fame as “Coach of the Year”. He was also voted “Golf Coach of the Year,” by the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) for four consecutive years, beginning in 2015.

Smoot served 24 years in the United States Marine Corps; retiring as Chief Warrant Officer – 3 and becoming the third Black golfer to ever make the Marine Corps Golf Team and to compete in the All-Inter-Service Golf Championships in 2002. He has been involved in golf for over 20 years and has competed all over the world. He provides golf
instruction to all levels and skill sets of golfers who are looking to make an impact in their lives and chosen professions. 

 

In 2013, Smoot became the very first golf coach in the history of Miles College. Within four years, Coach Smoot’s golf team was able to exceed all its goals by winning the 2016 SIAC Golf Championship and runner-up on three other occasions. In the same year, Smoot received Outstanding Coach of the conference championship, as well as the NAACP Man of Distinction Award.

One of Coach Smoot’s greatest accomplishments is that his Miles College Golf Team received the SIAC All-Academic Team Award in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, which means they understand that without education there is no success.

As a member of the 33 rd PGA Minority Collegiate Championship, PGA Works Career Expo Advisory Council and Vice-President of Black College Golf Coaches Association;Coach Smoot is dedicated to the future of our youth, HBCU golf and young professionals of color.

Leonard Smoot is a native of Flint, Michigan where he attended Flint Beecher High School and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Huntingdon College. He is married to Melissa Howard-Smoot and has two daughters Candace and Kelsey.

Smoot has continued to grow the game of golf at Miles, where he has been the only coach in the program’s six-year history, and in the metro Birmingham community. He has won one SIAC championship and finished second three times while also winning the last three SIAC Coach of the Year awards.
